ART INSTALLATION - DESIGN & BUILT
A water-powered slide projector. Exhibited in the solo show 'Ananas and the Flatifish' at PEER, London (Nov 2020 - Jan 2021)
"Fade" is a kinetic sculpture and site-specific performance designed and built to explore measurement, memory, and the sublime force of the natural world.
The work takes its inspiration from the first self-recording tidal gauge, erected on the Isle of Sheppey in 1831, a device that allowed the sea to "draw" itself onto paper via a system of pulleys and floats. Reimagining this historic instrument, we engineered a contemporary analogue: a delicate apparatus crafted from wood and ceramic that uses water itself as its operating force.
In a series of intimate performances throughout the exhibition, visitors witnessed this mechanism in action. Drips of water, echoing the rhythm of the tide, gradually filled a vessel. This weight actuated a shutter, causing a projected seascape to appear to slowly flood before dissolving—a poignant meditation on impermanence, climate change, and the relentless, measurable yet unstoppable cycles of nature.
