The Neighborhood Museum: A Touring Art Installation
Public Art. Funded by the Arts Council England
Featured at Plymouth light festival Illuminate 2020
This touring art installation takes the form of a mobile museum, acting as a vehicle for community narrative and a living archive of belonging. It operates as a social practice project that challenges traditional notions of value and history, empowering residents to document and assert their own stories.
The museum's collection is built entirely from submissions by local residents, each of whom selects a personal object that symbolizes their idea of home. Each curated artifact is displayed not for its monetary worth, but for its profound emotional significance, accompanied by a narrative that tells the contributor's story.
In an era of rapid urban change, this project reclaims the narrative of place. By placing these objects of intimate value on pedestals under museum lighting, it argues that the most important cultural heritage is found in the memories of the people who call a place home. The installation makes the private public, fostering empathy and connection by revealing the collective emotional landscape that forms the true fabric of a community.
