DESIGN & EDIT
9Notes is an artist book conceived and designed as a silent, visual score—a tactile extension of the Pineapple Orchestra installation itself. My role encompassed the full art direction, editorial curation, and design, translating the project's core themes of collaboration, materiality, and colonial history into a printed format.
The book functions as both documentation and a standalone artifact. The design intentionally mirrors the installation's aesthetic, utilizing a restrained, elegant typographic system and a meticulous layout that allows the photography of the instruments, the Ecuadorian workshop, and the hands of the makers to take center stage.
Every material choice, from the paper stock to the binding, was made to evoke a sense of craft and permanence, counterpointing the organic, ephemeral nature of the pineapples used in the installation. The editing process was an act of curation, weaving together images of the build process, the final instruments, and the global exhibitions in Bristol and Goa to create a non-linear narrative that invites quiet contemplation, much like the experience of interacting with the orchestral sculptures.
